Tarpon can grow up to about 8 feet long and weigh up to 280 pounds, but the more common size is 4 feet and 80 - 100 pounds. Their lifespan can be up to 50 years or more.Interesting FactsTarpon are known for their acrobatics and can jump 10 feet out of the water and swim up to 35 mph. They are close relatives of Skipjack and Ladyfish.Although they are edible, people rarely eat them because of their small, hard-to-clean bones.Tarpon has been around for a long time - 125 million years kind of time!Tarpon are capable of filling themselves with air. This gives it a predatory advantage when oxygen levels in the water are low.SpawningTarpon spawn offshore in warm, secluded areas, usually in late spring to late summer and with a full moon or new moon cycle. The sperm and egg are all released into the water in a process referred to as broadcast spawning. The female tarpons will release up to 12 million eggs at a time. Once the eggs are fertilized, they float on top of the water. The eggs look like transparent ribbons, which make it difficult for predators to notice. The eggs will absorb the nutrients in the water through the skin. After hatching, they enter the juvenile stage, remaining in the shallow water until they have developed into an adult.

Great trip this morning, Carter Spohn and his family joined us. We started out trolling to the north and immediately got slammed by a Barracuda as soon as we left the inlet. This was followed up 3 more hits by Bonita so we had our trolling action pretty quickly today. We then went on the drift but the current was so fast we had to drop the grapple to slow out drift down. This worked pretty good and we landed a bucket full of porgies, grunts, and sand tiles. We released red grouper, parrotfish, remoras, and queen and grey triggerfish.

Ken brought his cousins out for Turkey Day and it was a beautiful day. Kite Fishing was extremely slow, but I ran a deep line at the same time and the deep line produced two keeper sized Red Grouper. To get two legal sized Red Grouper in one day is the Palm Beach equivalent of buying two winning lottery tickets in one day

Today was fun in spite of crummy weather conditions, the wind was howling and we had some monsoon like rain showers to start the trip. We opted to fish the intercoastal today because the ocean was just too rough to play in but we caught a bunch of fish. Nothing huge, but there was always a rod bent. By the time the trip was finished we had caught barracuda, blue runners, cero mackerel, grunts, lane snappers, yellowtail snappers, mangrove snappers, jack crevalle, and even a black grouper. Everybody had a great time and the weather even brightened up by the end of the trip !

Today was just a lucky day ! The Ciancio family came out with me, while Paul was setting up the kite rods, I dropped a live bait in right on top of an Amberjack. Literally we weren't fishing one minute and we had a fish on! Later we had a mystery fish steal a live bait off of the inside kite rod, then he grabbed the live bait off of the outside kite rod and we realized it was a Mahi when he started jumping. Unfortunately two jumps later he dropped the bait, but...I was lowering another deep bait on the other side of the boat and he grabbed that and we got a solid hook up. Two big fish in the fishbox ! We then got a couple of red groupers which we had to release because the season is now closed, one of them had a spaghetti tag. A couple more reef fish and we were done !

Selecting the appropriate gear and tackle involves a thoughtful consideration of the target species, fishing environment, and angler preferences. High-quality fishing rods and reels provide the backbone for a successful angling venture, while a well-curated assortment of lures, lines, and hooks ensures adaptability to diverse fishing scenarios. The synergy between gear and tackle forms the cornerstone of an angler's strategy, elevating fishing from a pastime to a skillful pursuit.

2 1/2 year old Brooklyn and 4 1/2 year old Mason made their first fishing trip today on Tuna Wahoo. Because of the ages we stayed in the Intercoastal, but we loaded up on little snappers and grunts and the kids had a blast. I look forward to fishing with them again.

It was soggy today, light showers, but Chris and his family wanted to go, so we went ! We went right on the drift with live and dead baits, the kingfish bit us off a couple of times, but the bottom bite was on. We had a lot of short snappers, but we caught enough porgies and other bottom fish that the family took home a nice bag of fillets.

Paul and his buddies joined us today for a late morning trip, we didn't leave the dock until 10:45 and I was a little nervous about how the bite would be with this late departure. Nothing much to see when we were trolling and then we got a good hit on the planer rod and Paul reeled in a very respectable King Mackerel. Not to be outdone John brought in a real nice Mutton Snapper on the drift on a dead flat lined sardine, and then just when I was ready to pull the plug on the trip, John reeled in another King Mackerel on a live Goggle Eye. Scott was battling a bad case of mal-de mer, so we pulled the plug early and came back to the marina.
